Corcomroe Abbey and Dunguaire Castle

Castle at Ballyvaughan On our way around Galway Bay, we stopped at several castle ruins. This block tower castle just outside of Ballyvaughan is a very common sight almost everywhere in Ireland. Currently, the castle is used by the home owner as an entry and parking area for the house. In the second photo, I tried to restore the scene to one reminiscent of days of old.

A drawbridge and maybe a maiden in the tower would complete the scene.

Corcomroe Abbey
Corcomroe Abbey is an early 13th-century Cistercian monastery located a few miles east of the village of Ballyvaughan. It was once known as "St. Mary of the Fertile Rock", a reference to the Burren's fertile soil.

The abbey is noted for its detailed carvings and other rich ornamentation, which are not commonly found in structures from this period. It features a typical cruciform church facing east, with a small chapel in each transept.

Extensive reconstruction was in progress during our visit.

Dunguaire Castle
Dunguaire Castle is a 16th-century tower house near Kinvarra. The castle's 75 foot-tower and its defensive wall have been restored to excellent condition. It is thought to be the most-photographed castle in Ireland.

The castle was built by the Hynes clan in 1520. Dunguaire Castle
